James & Emily
Dublin - Pre-Wedding
Before the wedding, we will be hanging out for a few days in Dublin. If you're planning to the do the same, we've organized some room blocks for your convenience, and have some suggestions on things to do while there!
*We added a notes section below for more Dublin info! -March '26
Tips from James & Em
We got back from our menu tasting in late March, and wanted to add this section with some notes on things we think may be helpful to our guests! We also added to the list of suggested things to do, and we added some notes to the Castle page as well.
If you have any questions, let us know!
Airport & Getting around Dublin / Ireland
When you arrive in Dublin, you'll go through passport control and Customs before you exit the airport. To get to the city, you can either wait in the cab line outside and get a cab to the city center, or you can download the FreeNow by Lyft app from the app store - highly recommend this, but you have to sign up before you leave the US if you aren't planning on getting cell service as they send you an SMS when you go through the signup process! Through FreeNow, you can order a cab as if you're ordering a Lyft, and it's very convenient - you can use this all throughout Dublin and to get back to the airport.
On the way out of Dublin, if you are flying back to the states, you have to go through US Preclearance, which is essentially US Customs and Passport Control. This does take additional time - we recommend you get to the airport about 3 hours before your scheduled departure to be safe. See the Castle Details page if you have an earlier flight on Wednesday and need to get your own transportation back to Dublin.
If you're looking to rent a car, we took a Freenow cab to the Hertz on South Circular Road - it gets you a little bit outside of the crazy city center, and it's an easier drive to get to the highway. We picked up the car from there and dropped it off at the airport, and it was a great experience!
Cell Phones
Nearly every establishment has WiFi, so if you don't want to get an international data plan, you can always connect to WiFi to use iMessage/Facetime. You can keep your phone in Airplane Mode the whole time you are in Ireland, and just connect to WiFi when it's available. If you do want to have data and service everywhere, contact your carrier and see if they offer a international data plan of some sort. Xfinity, for instance, offers a $10/day Global Pass that we take advantage of - that allows you to call, text, and use data anywhere in the world.
To receive updates from us or if we otherwise need to communicate with anyone, we will be using Whatsapp, which is a messaging app that can be used both on WiFi and on data. We'll be starting groups through that app to communicate likely the week before the wedding, so be sure to download that if you don't have it already! Note: if you choose not to have an international data plan and are going to rely on WiFi for communication, you won't see any messages in the Whatsapp group unless you are on WiFi.
General
1) Ireland uses "UK plugs." We recommend you pick up an adapter or two on Amazon to bring with you - they are relatively cheap. Check your hair dryers and hair tools for their voltage and look up if you can use them abroad - even if you have a voltage converter, you could fry your tool so you want to check before you pack it (i.e. Dyson AirWraps won't work / will break).
2) We found that everywhere uses card / Apple Pay so you don't need cash, however a lot of places don't give the option to tip so we had Euros on hand for that. You can look up the best way to get euros depending on your bank - we withdrew cash from a Bank of Ireland ATM in Dublin for a $5 fee, but in June we likely will order some Euros ahead of time just to select our denominations and have it when we get there. Do not exchange money in the airport it's a rip-off. Nowhere in Ireland accepts USD.
Where to Stay
We've organized some room blocks for a slight discount than the going rate, but please feel free to stay wherever you are most comfortable! Dublin has been ranked the 4th most walkable city in the world, so it's very easy to get around. We have a Marriott and a Hilton hotel below for those that want to book with points.
Please note: if you'd like to use the room blocks, they need to be booked at least 90 days in advance!
Update April 14, 2026: Unfortunately, the room blocks have now closed. If you haven't booked, you may be able to reach out to the hotels and see if they will still honor the room block price for you.

Once You're There
Below is a few activities that we would recommend while there! There is also plenty of shopping, eating, and drinking to do - see the map at the top of the page for some of our faves!

Guinness Storehouse Tour
Emily's favorite place on earth! The storehouse offers a self guided tour with a few different options for add-ons, ending in the amazing Gravity Bar looking over the city. You can book tickets 6 months in advance - popular times will sell out as we get closer so I highly recommend booking in advance.
A group of us are going on Saturday, June 13 at 1 pm so if you want to schedule your time around then, we will all be close together!

Strawberry Walking Tours
We are huge fans of free walking tours - you get the best guides that are usually extremely entertaining, and you get to tip at the end to reflect what you think the tour is worth. The Dublin tour gives you a great overview of the city's history in about 2.5 hours.

Jameson Distillery Tour
For the whiskey lovers, head over to Bow St for a Jameson distillery tour and tasting, or even a cocktail making class! You can book these tickets about 6 months in advance.

St. Patrick's Cathedral
This previously Catholic cathedral (now Anglican) is of the main sites to see, right in the heart of Dublin. Beyond a ticketed visit which can be booked 3 months in advance, there are masses Saturday & Sunday mornings if you are interested in attending.

Dublin Castle
13th century castle in Dublin city center, with a rich history of both English rule & Irish rule.
You can book tickets for either a self guided or guided tour 15 days in advance. The guided tours do sell out in the summer months relatively quickly.

Trinity College Old Library
Regarded as one of the most beautiful libraries in the world, you can visit the college grounds & see one of the oldest manuscripts in the world called the Book of Kells, considered a national treasure for Irish culture.
You can book tour tickets online around 6 months in advance - these do sell out in the summer months!
